The Local Motors Strati in the Local Motors Store in Knoxville, TN.
The car is almost completely printed using the largest 3D printer in the world. Local Motors has a storefront here because they are working directly with ORNL(Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where some of the atomic bomb parts were created) on this tech of bigh strength 3D printed item. ORNL is just about 45 minutes outside Knoxville so a storefront made sense to establish there brand on a local level.

They were printing one at SEMA the last time I was there, got to see it being built. Pretty awesome.

Local Motors is doing some interesting things. I don’t know how the safety regulations will be dealt with but they need to keep doing them. If anything they can sell their knowledge to bigger car companies who can find a way to implement 3D printing into auto manufacturing. I need them to put a Rally Fighter in the Knoxville store now though.

I’ve got friends who work at the headquarters in AZ. I am jealous of them. Applied for a couple jobs there out of college, but never heard back.

My dad sent me photos of it from IMTS when they built it, it looked awful.

It almost looks like a KTM xbow. I’m interested to see what they decide to do with it.

Yeah the 3D texture is bad but I’m assuming they left this one unpolished because it’s #cool

I have to admit, as silly and unnecessary as this is ... I can’t help wanting one.

I don’t think it’s really that unnecessary because the tech that Can come out of this will be awesome. It is silly though.

Yeah, silly is a better word for it.

It didn’t help that they were printing at really low res so that they could print faster for an audience.

My Materials Science class is going to ORNL sometime in January. I’m super excited, especially for all the carbon fiber stuff.
